A dinosaur that is not quite a dinosaur
The fan-maintained TV Tropes entry describes the first enemy as a combination of a Dilophosaurus and a human being. Players searching for the dilophosaurus human hybrid are looking for this creature.
Its half-human shape is what separates it from the more straightforward dinosaurs later in the game. It feels closer to a slasher than an animal, which suits the early, claustrophobic museum sections.
Designed with RJ Palmer
The developers covered how the game’s monsters were made in their creature-design devlog. Fan wikis credit the Hybrid design to a collaboration with RJ Palmer, the artist known for creature concept work.
That combination explains why the Hybrid reads as both a Dilophosaurus and something human at once. The Dilophosaurus page covers the species reference in more detail.
How to survive it
There is no weapon to fight back with. The official description builds survival around running, jumping, climbing, wall running, bouncing and sliding, so each encounter is a chase.
Keep moving, look for the climbable route and avoid dead ends. The wall-run guide and the walkthrough page show the Chapter One route where these chases begin.
Spoiler: why the Hybrid matters
Stop here if you have not finished the game. Fan plot notes connect the Dilophosaurus to Dennis, the imaginary friend Dalton’s son had been talking to.
The Dennis page explains that link, and the ending page covers what happens once the mystery is solved.
